Urban Drainage Systems: Evolution of Problems

چکیده
The practice of urban drainage has been traced back to some of the earliest recorded histories of humankind. The expeditious conveyance of stormwater from urbanized areas was motivated primarily by reasons of convenience and the reduction of ̄ood damage potential. The removal of domestic wastes from households using waterborne conveyances was also found to be convenient. Such practices to improve the quality of urban life, however, have resulted in other problems, such as arti®cially induced ̄ooding, increased erosion, and environmental degradation stemming from the pollution of receiving waters. As a result, attention has focused on the comprehensive management of urban drainage systems, which includes, in addition to the ancient use of conveyances such as channels and pipes, the implementation of storage and treatment facilities as well as the real-time control of entire systems. The objective of this practice, is commonly referred to as stormwater management, is to intelligently utilize components of drainage systems in a manner that will improve the quality of urban life while protecting the environment in a cost-effective manner. To facilitate the effective management of these inherently complex combinations of natural elements and engineering works, mathematical modeling is often employed to better understand system behavior and performance which in turn leads to better engineering and management decisions. This book concentrates on the mathematical modeling of urban drainage systems, particularly for planning-level decision analyses. In the present chapter we outline the problems, both past and present, related to drainage system design practices. It is fundamentally important for engineers

Because of urban rapid growth of Iran, some problems such as propagation of environmental pollutions, urban inundation and flood hazards due to lack of appropriate drainage systems and irregularity of conduits & streams are the major difficulties in urban watersheds. Because of hydrological & hydraulic processes complexities in urban area, using of computer models would be effective. In this st...
متن کاملIdentification areas with inundation potential for urban runoff harvesting using the support vector machine model
Rainfall-runoff from urban areas is one of the available water resources, which is wasted due to lack of attention and proper management. Besides, urban runoff excess of drains capacity causing many problems including inundation and urban environmental pollution. Therefore, harvesting this runoff can provide a part of the required water in urban areas, and also reduce flood and urban inund...
متن کاملDeveloping Self-adaptive Melody Search Algorithm for Optimal Operation of Multi-reservoir Systems
Operation of multi-reservoir systems is known as complicated and often large-scale optimization problems. The problems, because of broad search space, nonlinear relationships, correlation of several variables, as well as problem uncertainty, are difficult requiring powerful algorithms with specific capabilities to be solved. In the present study a Self-adaptive version of Melody Search algorith...
متن کاملChallenges and developments of bioretention facilities in treating urban stormwater runoff; A review
Bioretention or rain garden is a preferable low impact development (LID) approach due to its characteristics which reflect natural water cycle processes. However, this system is still little understood and quite complicated in terms of design and implementation due to many technical considerations. Hence, this paper gives a review of the challenges and developments for the use of bioretention f...

Flooding due to the failure of drainage systems is a serious problem for many urban watershed of Iran. This paper shows how flooding in urban drainage systems can be simulated by one- dimensional hydrodynamic modeling incorporating the interaction between (I) the buried pipe systems (II) the streets with open channel flow. The values of the NS, RMSE, and %BIAS statistics were also calculated to a...
